Actor, writer, director, and part-time musician Christopher Guest is stuck in rut. He makes (or appears in) a so-far endless string of hilarious mockumentaries. Starting with This is Spinal Tap, evenutally gettting to the award-winning Best in Show, and most recently with last year's A Mighty Wind, Guest skewers sub-cultures and archetypes with irony and wit unmatched in cinema today.
The latter film is especially noteworthy because of the music on the soundtrack -- all orignal works by Guest and other members of the cast -- is excellent. In fact, "A Kiss at the End of the Rainbow" was nominated for the Best Music, Original Song Academy Award. Let me pack on another accolade by making it my Song of the Day. Eugene Levy and Catherine O'Hara (as the fictional duet Mitch & Mickey) take the song very seriously. And you should, too. Unlike the songs from Spinal Tap, it is a genuine folk tune that could have been performed by any of the legends of the '60s.
And that's what makes A Mighty Wind unique compared to Guest's other movies. The music is so genuine, the characters are so realistic, and the stories have such life that if we didn't know the faces so well from previous films we could seriously believe this to be a real documentary on PBS or the BBC. Just one that happens to be genuinely funny.
Go buy the movie and buy the CD (or download it from iTunes). 'Nuff said.
