Can you say "Podcast?"
For the past few hours I've been listening to Podcasts from Pastor Greg Laurie of Harvest Ministries and one of several persistent thoughts was "Golly, this guy sounds a lot like Tom Smothers of The Smothers Brothers -- especially when he makes a joke or tries to change his voice.
Okay, another persistent thought is that I really like to hear Bible stories in this fashion. I've learned quite a bit about the prophet Elijah ("Elijah: Someone Just Like Us" -- 1 Kings 17:1-7 from 08/22/2005), history of the era, how idol worship doesn't just include artistically formed bits of clay or metal, and how it all related to my life today.
Pastor Laurie's "shows" are just some of the Podcasts that I downloaded for my last roadtrip but couldn't hear in the car and haven't really listened to since. I might listen to a few minutes of one or another now and then, but I haven't really sat down and listened -- really listen -- and now I wish that I had.
The Podcast God in Tech (GiT) hasn't been posted as often as I would like though I have listened to every episode. Only one has been a keeper -- #5 -- but they are very good. I highly recommend that you give it a listen sometime. An announcement posted yesterday said that new episodes will likely be posted on Tuesday nights.
You may notice in the iTunes screencap that there are Podcasts called Sex and the Bible. Yeah, that's what I thought, too. It's not as risky as you might think, however I wouldn't let anyone under 16 listen without strong parental guidance. These are from Liquid Church and Pastor Tim Lucas, both of whom seemed to be wiped off the Web until recently. From the "chapters" I've heard thus far the focus seems to be on developing a firm relationship that glorifies God. Well, that's the way it should be, of course, but as you can imagine, this topic is a bit edgy and Pastor Lucas keeps it that way. All in all, entertaining and enlightening so far.
I wish that I could say the same of other Podcasts I've sampled. Most are pretty banal and unenlightening. Maybe others have noticed something I haven't. Or maybe it's like radio ... something for everyone but you just have to find it. More likely I just need to spend more time searching for something. Someone get word to Chuck Swindoll to put out some Podcasts! Until then, I'm off to try TWiT (recommened by GiT).
